Q: Do I need advertising agency experience to be taken seriously as a copywriter?
A: (Rebecca Matter) No, not at all! You definitely do not need agency experience to be taken seriously or to be successful as a copywriter — and I know tons of working copywriters who’ve never worked for an agency but still pull in six-figures or more each year with their writing projects.
Granted, if a writer has agency experience, he/she should play it up since it’s a benefit, in the same way any kind of industry experience can be valuable. But it’s definitely not necessary.
